Recently acquired a box set of the complete catalogue of John Dowland ... also a milestone in music, pre-classical era. But worth listening to for so many themes ... and much that surfaces in later classical music.
Madrigals, motets, virelai, and similar music all definitely worth their weight in any "classical" collection, IMO ...
