Actually, fellow late singer Billy Joe Royal may have been the first person to sing this song because before Joe South was singing on the radio himself, he produced Billy Joe's first two albums in 1965 and 1967. Joe South is also the writer of the song along with several other songs that were placed on Billy Joe's first two albums.
God bless you and their families always!!!

P.S. "Down In The Boondocks", "I Knew You When", "I've Got To Be Somebody", "Yo-Yo", and "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden", were also done first by Billy Joe, but written by Joe. "Children", "Untie Me", and "Old Bridges Burn Slow" are three more song written by Joe that were eventually recorded and released by Billy Joe.
