Default Songs about SPRAWL

Many people act like people in rural counties love new population growth, but the truth is far from that.

Here are 3 country songs talking about the effects sprawl has on rural communities

YouTube - smith won't sell the farm

Lyrics: "His cows get loose and run right thru the fast food parking lots
He gets calls from the mini-malls
when they're downwind from his hogs.
When his tractor backs up traffic, the reception ain't too warm.
The city's growing around him, but Daddy won't sell the farm"

YouTube - Alan Jackson - Little Man

Lyrics: "[SIZE=5][SIZE=2] Now the court square's just a set of streets
That the people go round but they seldom think
Bout the little man that built this town
Before the big money shut em down
And killed the little man
Oh the little man"

Travis Tritt,
Country Ain't Country (couldn't find video)

Lyrics "The back forty was sold to make up for hard times
Then sold by the half acre lot overnight
The houses went up and the trees were cut down
And there went the finest deer hunting around
Lord everyone's locking their doors
'Cause country ain't country no more

Some of them knew it 30+ years ago....

Lynyrd Skynyrd - All I Can Do Is Write About It

Quote:
Lord I can't Make Any Changes
All I can do is write em in a song
Cause I can see the concrete slowly creeping,
Lord take me and mine before that comes
And he did.

I dont know the original artist, but Counting Crows covered the song kinda recently. The lyrics go something like "they pave paradise to put up a parking lot". The rest of the song isnt really about sprawl, but that part sure is.

Mike beat me to it, It is off her third LP called Ladies Of The Canyon, released 37, that's right, 37 years ago, in the Summer of 1970. It is a great Lp as well. Another one of my favorite songwriters, the late Dan Fogelberg, put out a song off his 1990 release The Wild Places. It's called Blind To The Truth, and it is a scathing review of today. Here is a couple lines from it. "Now the politicians bicker on the early evening news, pledging their allegiance to whoever they can use. And the corporate bosses snicker as they watch the profits soar, they don't care what they make next month just as long as it is more. They take our farms and marshlands and drive nature to the wall, just so they can build another g*d**m shopping mall." AND. "In the overcrrowded cities where the nights are bright as day, you spend your weekly paycheck and turn your eyes away. "

My 1st thought was Big Yellow Taxi, too. BTW, HH - this is 2008!

So here are The Fixx - Less Cities, More Moving People - from Phantoms, 1984

Another home falls by the wayside
A few old cushions stuffed with pride
A hand is shaking from the rubble
This is spirit still alive

Less cities more moving people..

YouTube - The Fixx - Less Cities, More Moving People

Probably not so much about sprawl as it is decay, but I've been waiting for a place to post my favorite Fixx tune.

Correction (only in my humble opinion, of course ...): Counting Crows ruined the song kinda recently.
