In the 6th grade I had a crush on a pretty girl named Leslie. We lived on the same street and were in the same class. Anyway, she was the first one I was attracted to and brave enough to ask out to a movie. She said ok! But for some forgotten reason, we never made that date. I'll still place her sweet 1966 smile with this sweet 1966 song.
Most songs just remind me of my life at the time the song was popular and being played alot, that's what's great about listening to older songs-it takes you back.Pop songs of the late sixties and early seventies reminds me of listening with a small transistor radio lying in bed with an earplug in one ear. I guess I just gave my age away. Superstar by the Carpenter reminds me of my first boyfriend in the 6th grade.I played all my brothers Beatles albums in my bedroom on a record player. The White Album reminds me of getting my first snare drum when I was about 10 and playing to it.

Hey - it was the summer after 6th grade! I got over it. The two of us went to school together K-12 and we went on to other interests. I was off by a year, though: It was 1965. Strangely, I've never seen Mary Poppins except for a snippet here and there. And yeah, that song is a train wreck...

A song that in my mind was written about 9/11 almost 30 years before it happened, and what I consider to be quite possibly the greatest song ever, American Tune by Paul Simon (sorry about the lengthy lyrics and Paul's horrible mustache, but hey, it was the 70's!)
Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
but it's all right, it's all right
for we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
and sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest

Stephen Stills - Love The One You're With - YouTube
My younger sister HATED this one! Her fiance was in the Army and stationed in West Germany (yes, in the days of The Wall). She was hoping he wasn't doing what is suggested in the song. Sadly, after she married him and they returned to Germany together, she eventually figured out that he WAS doing just what she feared. Yet, she thought she could make it work. Unfortunately, he kept it up till she was smart enough to leave. I guess she had a right to hate this song.

I think of my younger sister when I hear The Carpenters. She went through a "crazy about them" period and had this as her wedding song. She died a little more than two years ago, and I miss her so much that I made myself cry by listening to this. She was a quirky, funny, sometimes melancholy lady, and I think of her every day several times a day.
I think this is the group she used to see at Ted's Warehouse in Charleston, Ill., in the Seventies! The manager hired the group to play the day of her birthday because he knew how much she liked them.
