Why is it that they rarely play 1950s music on the oldies stations anymore? I remember back in the old days the oldies stations was nothing but music from the 1950s to the early 1970s but today it's from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s and they rarely play anything from the pre-British Invasion era anymore.
There is an Oldies station near where i live that plays late 50's music sometimes. Artists like Ricky Nelson, Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin, Connie Francis, the Impalas, and such. But mostly they play Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dylan, etc. And now they play a bunch of 70's as well, but its mostly Disco junk. The station has lost many listeners because of it too. It seems odd to play Bobby Darins "Dreamlover" and then switch to "Funkytown".
Because most people of that generation are 'dying' out?
Perhaps those listeners are just in the smaller demographic now. Even in the biggest radio markets such as NY and Phila don't even have much of oldies stations anymore. I know at least the one here in Philly went from playing alot of 50s stuff to mostly 60s now.
