Default Music your mom made you listen to

I am so proud to tell you all that I know the words to most Barry Manilow songs from the 70's thanks to mom. Oh my god, did I just write that for everyone to read.......edit..edit.

It could be debated she had better taste than me, at the time I was listening to The Bay City Rollers........did I just say that also? I need a drink.

Well, my mom was the local church organist and knew a classical tune or 2. She used to assist an aspiring soprano named Tasha with her wundermusic in our living room. My dad, my brothers and I all headed for the hills on these blessed occasions.

Kinda funny, but today I almost (almost) totally enjoy the opera.

Sneaking into the house at 1 a.m. or so after down a few pitchers of 3.2. beer, and nursing a real nice headache, my mom brings in the kitchen radio, plugs it in, opens the door, And what is playing. Gordon McRae, Off the original cast LP "Oklahoma". OH, What a Beautiful Morning". Turns it up REAL LOUD!!!!!. For the next 2 hours I feel like a polka band is playing in my head! ARGH!!!!!!

My mom has such eclectic taste in music and she has passed that on to me. She would listen to 50's doo-***, motown, disco, classical, pop, etc. All of that is fine and dandy, but the one artist that she used to listen to that i never acquired a taste for is Anne Murray. Does anyone remember her? She's from Canada and sings sleepy elevator music. and the thing about my mom is when she really liked a song, she would play it over and over, i think she still does that! Anyway, the torture of hearing Anne Murray over and over on a Sat morning probably didn't help me become a fan.

My mom blasted her music out of this little RCA phonograph she bought with her first paycheck after college. I was subjected to the soundtracks from Oklahoma! and Carousel (she still cries when she hears "You'll Never Walk Alone"), Jack Jones and Frank Sinatra, the score from Swan Lake, and her very favorite, Harry Belafonte.

My dad didn't blast. He listened to his music at a decent volume, and then sang: Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Roger Miller. Stuff he couldn't sing included Dave Brubeck, Benny Goodman and George Shearing.

Heh. Just thinking about it gives me a headache, and I haven't had a beer in a couple of days. And 3.2 beer ... ack!!!

The only cool group my Mom liked was Simon and Garfunkle. She was telling my Great Aunt about the S and G concert she attended. Aunt Lil was a little hard of hearing and thoughtthe duo came back for an encore and sang "Bridge over a Tub of Water."

"I cried a tear........you wiped it dry" thats her, right? That one was forced on me also. "so high that I could see eternity...........you needed me....you needed me."

Wonder if my kids are going to say my dad made me listen to ......Janes Addiction, Alice in Chains, Queen, Metallica, White Stripes.....all that wimpy stuff. I know they'll do it w/ The Kinks, Beatles and Johnny Cash.
