Same timeframe as the Slade song... Autograph, "Turn Up the Radio". Their only hit (#29), it's still heard a lot on satellite and internet radio. Steve Lynch won Guitar Player's "Guitar Solo of the Year" award for the song in 1985.

Too British for American listeners, probably. The tight shot of Noddy rolling his tongue from cheek to cheek probably ensured it wouldn't go any higher.

When Autograph opened for Van Halen, Lynch was told he would not be able to demonstrate his two-handed tapping technique onstage. He had to play the whole set with traditional picking and fretting. Eddie Van Halen felt he didn't need anyone stealing his thunder.
