Beautiful equipment. I'd love to get into this and keep it alive. I don't listen to much music at home anymore. The putting a CD in the player is no where the same as putting an LP on and turning it up. Any suggestions on affordable equipment to get started again?

It depends on what your looking for,and budget.
Try craigslist. A basic system can be found under 100.00 if your not to picky.
Technics Vintage Complete Audio Rack System (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/ele/780920640.html - broken link)
Though these are way out of my reach,, they are only ''pocket change'' to some people.

One can use an outboard phono preamp. You plug the turntable into the preamp and then plug the preamp into one of the receiver's inputs, modern HT receivers usually have plenty of inputs. Very simple.
Here's such a unit available at Parts Express. Parts Express is a good outfit and all the hi-fi DIY guys know it.

I can't seem to see very good back there and can't find the phono input back there (using a mirror and a flashlight) so I've got it hooked up to the VCR2 input and the switch to line. Am I cheating myself of the analog sound? (please don't laugh at my stupid question if this is the case!)

I'm still wondering about the line/phono switch. Will using the line switch instead of the phono switch and a phono input on the rcvr compromise on the sound or the analog nature of the album?

I would think you would be ok on analog but I'm not positive. Fellow stereo buffs, what say you?

No good, no good at all if I understand you properly. You MUST somewhere along the line run the phono signal through a phono stage which provides RIAA EQ, otherwise it will sound terrible. Yes, "analog". And terrible.
If you've a proper phono stage somewhere outboard the receiver THEN you can run it into a line input.

darn. I'm so used to my old thing that I really have no idea what I'm doing with the new stuff! I'll keep learning about it. Thanks!

About any stereo receiver from 70's and 80's will have a phono in. The two main receivers I use most in my collections have two phono in's, two tape in's,two tape outs, two aux in's, and 8 gang tuners. They only show up on Ebay very very seldom. There's a ton of other models that are nice and show up alot there though.

McGowdog, did you figure this out? How are you liking your new turntable? I checked out a few different best buys and circuit city's and they hardly had anything --- I'm thinking of going down to Intrinsic next weekend, I'll probably get something used or online.

Hey, Wanto! I missed these last posts here.
I may still get something from Intrinsic. I don't know. I like my turntable and still haven't tried to record albums to CDs yet because I like just listening to my old vinyl down there in the basement.
I've got to fix the CD R/W on my laptop before I can use that feature anyway.
If I go to Intrinsic, I may want to just pick up a good old school tuner with the phono in and use my new turntable. If you get an old turntable, you'll have to buy a new needle for it and you may have to go online for that. Those guys know a couple of people who are selling their old turn tables.
To 1080: I think I said that wrong. I've had to switch to Line and use the VCR2 input to hear my albums. What I was wanting to do is switch it to Phono and use a phono input on my rcvr, but I can't find a phono jack on it.

Cool McGow!! I think I'm going to stop by Intrinsic one of these weekends, I'd really like to see what they have and they sounded like really nice people. I'd like to take my old vinyl and put it on my ipod, that'd be neat!
