It was started while Freddie was still alive, but in his last months. He passed away before they could finish it, so the remaining band members finished it on their own. The whole album is so depressing, that I have only been able to listen to it 3 times. I absolutely love Freddie Mercury, and feel that the music world took a huge loss when we lost Freddie.
Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon: an interesting blend of depressing and angry tunes. Very stark and raw
In the Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra: Sinatra deserves lots of credit for helping originate the concept album (way back in the '50s). While other of his albums were ring-a-ding snap your fingers cool, this one epitomized the melancholia of the gin-soaked guy ruminating over the dame that got away (supposedly influenced by Sinatra's break-up with Ava Gardener)
A lot of Pink Floyd songs are depressing, but I can't help but love them! And The Wall (the movie) is super-depressing, but it's one of my faves. Same goes for the Cure.
Most of Dir en Grey's albums are pretty depressing as well. And Simon and Garfunkle.
Control was wicked. The dude playing Ian Curtis was spot on. The whole movie was black and white so it really gave out a depressing undertone. It was awesome. I would def agree Joy Division Closer. But the Cure Disintegration also is at the top of the list. Floyd's Animals just makes me think of fields of golden wheat with the Grim Reaper holding a scythe for some reason. But it's one of my faves, maybe it's that whole reap what you sow jazz.
