Come on Eileen, is a great song. But I haven't a clue what they are saying.

Either way I have to say: "ya learn something every day".
You lost me, hun. The song was released in 1971, probably was written in 1969-70. Everything in the song happened in the 1950's and 60's and is taken from Don McLean's personal experiences or his view of events during that time. The reference to Nostradamus was about his writing style. Like the Big N. and William Shakespere, Mclean wrote where the meaning was hidden beneath the surface. No implication that he was predicting the future was intended.

Many people incorrectly think the song is about methamphetamines. It isn't, although the group's name, Dexeys Midnight Runners, is a reference to dexedrine. The song is about sex.

Johnnie Ray (spelled Johnny in the song) was a teenage singing idol in the 50's. Although he was of Native American descent, being from Oregon, I think, he was wildly popular overseas, particularly in Great Britain and Australia. Ray had lots of issues about his sexuality and was arrested for solicitation a couple of times, including once here in Detroit at a burlesque house. He was married briefly in the early 50's, but it is rumored and believed within the industry that he had a long term relationship with his gentleman manager.

Was that more than you wanted to know?

From what I remember there were parents across the U.S. that raised hell about the lyrics, claiming it should be banned. There was only one problem, though. The average person couldn't decipher the lyrics. There was enough letter writing at the time to get the FBI involved, I believe. I would have thought the FCC would be the first step on something like this. The government spent quite a bit of time on it, but could not find anything vulgar about the lyrics, basically because they couldn't understand them. I believe the group knew all along. It sold a LOT of 45's and the story on it had a lot to do with it. In the area I grew up (Denver), "Louie Louie" got back on the charts again, right in the middle of the controversy, around March of '65, I believe. Couldn't figure the lyrics at all, but one thing about the song; it was played as much as any other song by house bands at the 3.2. clubs.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime I mumbled the "lyrics" to Louie, Louie! Too funny!! You just have to laugh, as just about the whole world's population hasn't a clue as to what the song is actually saying. However, almost all know the "mumbled" lyrics LOL!!!!

Makes me want to look 'em up!!!

Killng me softly by the Fugees. I used to sing it in high school, I loved the song. My godmother explained the lyrics to me and I said oh......I didn't realized the song was about sex.

I had an ex-boyfriend when I was a senior in HS (he was in college) who introduced me to the music of The Violent Femmes. It was not until many years later that this song (Blister In The Sun-I loved to sing and jump around to it) was explained to me meaning-wise. I was surprised to learn what it is was all about!! Enough said-I'm sure you can fill in the blanks!!

P.S. Just because I said it, doesn't mean you all have to run off to You-tube to view it!!!!!!! Worse yet, pretty please don't link this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt either, I used to think they were singing about dying. I think that was a cover of a 70's song though.
I heard Macy Gray's "I try" and used to think "my world crumbles when you are not near" was "I wear goggles with you oh my dear"
