I would agree with most of the above posters: most of those bands were not "alternative" at all.

The most importand alternative bands of all time...Dead Can Dance, Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle, and Bauhaus, as they actually started movements, as opposed to jumping on them years later.

Labels are silly anyway. In my opinion most of these bands are rock to some degree. The alternative tag is annoying.

I voted REM and am pleased to see other REM fans. I love them. I have visited Athens twice. I missed Michael Stipe by 10 minutes. I sat in the Manhattan bar in Athens. I had a bad cold and was forcing myself to be out enjoying myself. I chatted up a woman who noticed I was sick and asked why Im not home. "I said, Im on vacation in REM's hometown and Im not going to sit in a hotel." She laughed and explained that I just missed Michael.

All the albums except for Monster and Around The Sun are great. I agree about UP. Not many like that album but I think it's a masterpiece.

REM in my opinion is not just the best alternative band. They are the best band in the history of pop/rock music in general. They're better than the Beatles! Aside from their Liberalism they are the greatest!

It's certainly a close race among some of the choices listed but, for me...
PIXIES.

You could always substitute "unpopular."

Although I dig most of the other bands, Soundgarden will always be my fave!

Default Pearl Jam!

Well I know they probably are not the most popular but I voted Pearl Jam because I just LOVE them!!! They are incredible. Hubby gets jealous because I call them my first love but hey I was 14 and they changed my life! Up until then my favorite band was New Kids on the Block so I thank God for Pearl Jam every day .
