I probably wouldn't have room to list all my favourite 1960s songs, but here is just a small sampling, in no particular order of preference . . .
The Beatles, "She Loves You." (Arguably the greatest rock and roll single of all time, no questions asked. In two minutes and nineteen seconds it tells the whole story of rock and roll as it was and still could be . . . Dave Marsh had it right: You could argue that the Beatles improved from there but not necessarily that they got better, because rock and roll didn't get better than that.)
Cream, "Sunshine of Your Love"
The Ronettes, "Walking in the Rain"
The Who, "I Can See For Miles"
B.B. King, "The Thrill is Gone"
Manfred Mann, "Pretty Flamingo"
The Four Seasons, "Rag Doll"
The Kinks, "Waterloo Sunset" and "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"
The Electric Flag, "Wine"
Helen Shapiro, "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (This English teenager---she was still a teenager when she cut this one---sang Carole King, who co-wrote and had the hit with it, right under the table.)
Traffic, "Paper Sun"
The Beach Boys, "Please Let Me Wonder"
Otis Redding, "I Can't Turn You Loose"
The Four Tops, "Standing in the Shadows of Love"
The Beatles, "Ticket to Ride"
The Rolling Stones, "The Last Time"
The Rascals, "I've Been Lonely Too Long"
The Doors, "Soul Kitchen"
James Carr, "The Dark End of the Street" (The single greatest cheating song ever.)
Patsy Cline, "Crazy"
The Temptations, "I Wish It Would Rain"
Gladys Knight and the Pips, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"
Canned Heat, "On the Road Again"
The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, "Fire Engine"
The Animals, "It's My Life"
Simon and Garfunkel, "The Sounds of Silence" (the single version)
The Beach Boys, "Surf's Up" (I know, it wasn't finally released until 1972 or thereabout, but it was one of the key songs---and one of the most beautiful songs---of the legendary, original, aborted Smile)
Cream, "Spoonful" (studio version)
Jimi Hendrix, "The Wind Cries Mary" (his most beautiful ballad)
The Spencer Davis Group, "I'm a Man"
The Yardbirds, "Over Under Sideways Down"
Big Brother and the Holding Company, "Ball and Chain"
The Blues Project, "Flute Thing"
Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto, "The Girl from Ipanema"
Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley, "Summer Samba (So Nice)"
The Beatles, "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite" (I always thought this was the least appreciated song from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
The Rolling Stones, "19th Nervous Breakdown"
James Brown, "Night Train"
Clarence Carter, "Too Weak to Fight"
Booker T. and the MGs, "Green Onions"
Undisputed Truth, "Smiling Faces Sometimes"
Santana, "Soul Sacrifice"
p.s. anyone who thinks Keith Richards and Mick Taylor were the best guitar duo never got to hear Peter Green and Danny Kirwan in the original Fleetwood Mac, or forgot Eric Clapton and Duane Allman on Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, or forgot Keith Richards and Brian Jones, at least before Jones destroyed himself . . .
