A lot of jazz performers "go commercial"--some never come back to their roots. But, once in a while, one of those "pop" performers looks back--and occasionally the results are electric. Here's one--Barbra Streisand at a 2006 concert, absolutely "owning" the Harold Arlen standard, "When the Sun Comes Out." Whatever one might think about Ms. Streisand's politics (personally, I don't like them), no one can take away her talent--especially when she returns to her jazz-based roots, as she does here. It doesn't hurt that she has one hell of a swinging orchestra backing her up on one of the swinging-est ballads ever penned.
I met James Moody a number of years ago at a jazz festival--a really nice guy. He put on a great performance that day. I always loved his version of "Parker's Mood," which he played both on sax and trumpet--as well as singing.
That's cool, I've never really met any jazz musicians except one minor saxophonist whose name I can't recall.
