I tend to choose material that is more poignant than heartbreakingly sad.
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah
Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears Mad World
Warren Zevon's Keep Me In Your Heart always makes me choke up a bit
spot on bwp!
The season finale of Californication opened up with Zevon's song, very very sad. But the episode turned out to be hilarious.
Buckley's voice lends heartache to Hallelujah ... can't believe Shrek pulled it off!
As long as Buckley's song is mentioned, Teardrop by Massive Attack is amazingly sad. Elizabeth Frazier, the singer, had just found out about Buckley's drowning ... you can hear it in her voice ... the video is equally stunning.
And also, the ASPCA has been running commercials with Sarah Mc ... whatever her name is, not a fan ... song, Arms of an Angel ... that with poor orphaned animals made me weep.
A lot of you posted songs that are sad, but I can think of even much sadder songs. It has to have the saddest lyrics and the singer has to sing it with the real emotions from their heart, another words you can feel their sadness and pain they are singing. Here's the saddest of the saddest:
"Seventeen," by Janis Ian. Not overwrought, not weepy, but the perfect song for those who were on the outside looking in during high school. An amazing little song.
Grandma's Hands by Bill Withers. It's about how much he loved his grandmother and how much he misses her.
