What songs would you consider the saddest/poignant ever sung?
My picks:
"Cat's In The Cradle"(Harry Chapin)-you have to be a parent of an almost-grown (or grown-up) child to really appreciate the meaning of this song. Before you realize it, your kids are grown, and by the time you finally settle down and have a lot of time to dedicate to them, they're grown up and gone and living their own lives. As a parent of a 15-year old boy, I feel a little sad whenever I hear this song, because it seems like yesterday he was a baby.
"He Would Be Sixteen"(Michelle Wright)-About a woman in her thirties who had to give up her son for adoption when she was a teenager. Really sad tune.
"Wish You Were Here"-Country song about a man who goes on a business trip, buys a postcard for his wife at home that says "Wish you were here", the plane crashes, the husband goes to Heaven, and afterwards his wife receives the postcard in the mail.
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" (George Jones)-Man spends his life longing for a lost love, until the day he dies.
John Doe No. 24-Mary Chapin Carpenter
So moving, I can't hear it w/out actually weeping.
So Lonesome I Could Cry-Hank Williams
Lots of stage and theater songs:
Vesti La Giubba -Pagliacci
Little Fall of Rain-Les Miserables
I'd Give My Life For You-Miss Saigon
How Could I Ever Know-Secret Garden
I was standing on the sidewalk in 1945
In Jacksonville, Illinois
When asked what my name was there came no reply
They said I was a deaf and sightless half-wit boy
But Louis was my name, though I could not say it
I was born and raised in New Orleans
My spirit was wild, so I let the river take it
On a barge and a prayer upstream

Reason: Please just particle of the songs.
"Brandy" - I dont know the artist but some of the lyrics were:
"I really miss you, Brandy, when are you coming back home? Im so all alone."
The guy was talking about his dog Brandy who ran away.
I tend to choose material that is more poignant than heartbreakingly sad.
Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah
Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears Mad World
Warren Zevon's Keep Me In Your Heart always makes me choke up a bit
Wow. I just posted some lyrics from the Cohen song somewhere around here. The Jules' cover is one of my favorites (used to great affect on an opening shot for a CSI episode awhile back--just happen to catch it). I still have not heard all of the last Zevon album but saw the last week of shows on Letterman. He gave Letterman a guitar backstage after the show and apparently it shook him up pretty bad.
