I have to admit I think I may be...or maybe was is the better word. I was just recently on youtube and found this Australian singer. Now before he even sung a word I thought to myself oh this is going to be bad and I almost clicked away...but I was totally wrong, he's actually quite good. So, my question is do you judge your music artists before ever hearing their music or is it just me?

Just as a thought. Perhaps if we all did not judge people by their cover before they ever opened their mouth it would be a better world.
I dont judge music artists by their dress code, color of skin, looks or any other reason. I do judge by what the media does to musicians who dont deserve it. Some have the greatest publisists but no talent. When the media brags and always has some one on their show and shows screaming idiots waiting in line to buy tickets I avoid those musicians. A few that come to mind with no talent but have the greatest free publicity in the world are Paris Hilton, Hanna Montana, Brittany Spears, Beyonce and other garbage like that. People hear on the TV their names so often that they figure they are missing out on something so they start listening to them.
Strangly Madonna fits this mold, at least she did in the 80s. And I love her music anyway. I look at her ways a little crooked but her music and talent overcomes all the crap the media can dish out.
So if the media makes a false pig out of some one then I avoid it. But I am that way with movies too. All the hype makes me boycot it.
In your defense, the chatter that he does before singing doesn't necessarily give a vote of confidence for what's about to come. In addition, his speaking voice doesn't fit what you would expect from his singing (not that it always does.) I was not expecting him to sound like he did.
As to your question, I don't tend to judge singers until I hear them sing. Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised when the voice, music style, etc. doesn't match the package. I will admit, however, if you tell me that the style is country, I have to work a little harder to be objective.

I, like rich-girl do not judge by looks, skin color, etc. So If i don't like something, it doesn't have to do with the performer necessarily. Even bands i like have turned out some music that i didn't like.
The only music i cannot stand is rap/ hip-hop, and modern pop. it has nothing to do with the performers, it has to do in the case of rap both the music, and lyrical content. The others, just the music.
He's alright, but he's got nothing on Jon Stevens.
Noiseworks are an amazing band. But then perhaps because I'm a huge fan he's got his work cut out for him?
To answer your original question, I'm pretty open to most music but I'm really not a fan of overplayed, sex it up to sell stuff.
I like music that makes you think, that makes you feel. I really enjoy clever lyrics but if the music isn't right then I can't get into it.
In terms of hearing something for the first time, then obviously my mind is open because it's all about what I can hear and often times I'm very surprised when I finally do see footage of an artist and how what I'm hearing doesn't really match in my mind to what I'm seeing or I'm surprised by what I'm seeing.
But then I don't tend to watch a lot of music television shows so for me most of the time it will always be about the music.
Oh and I picked "entire package" because there wasn't a music AND lyrics option.

That's funny that you mention that because it brings up another point: I've never heard of Noiseworks or that song before. After listening to the cover I did go and check out the original and I have to say I like the cover better. I think it stems from the fact that I always tend to like the first version of a song I hear...don't know why, but happens a lot, even with big name artists who do covers. Whichever I hear first, 9 times out of 10 is the one I prefer to listen to.

Agreed.

Oh sorry, I thought I made it a multiple-answer poll. I'll have to go check that.

You did.
But there wasn't the option to choose music AND lyrics together, so I chose entire package because both music and lyrics are important to me Presentation and personality not so much.
Silly machine won't let me requote with the edit but never mind, I'll add it.
I'm probably like you then, in that Noiseworks was/is huge here and I equate a lot of their music with the times and I heard them first. The cover is good, don't get me wrong, but I've spent a lot of years listening to Noiseworks and going to see them and have always identified with them so anybody that covers them would have to be something very special for me to see them as better.

I picked music and lyrics (clicked both boxes). I could care less what an artist looks like.
reminds me of a few weeks ago, I was digging around in my iTunes, trying to sort out some music into playlists, and I found that song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by this Hawaiian singer named Israel K. (last name REALLY long!). anyways, I wiki'd him and that guy (RIP) was freaking HUGE! I don't think that he would have made it in mainstream pop given how image driven it is, which is sad, b/c he had a beautiful voice. the pop industry seems to prefer gorgeous, thin, bimbo looking singers, some of whom have little talent (*cough*Britney*cough).
I agree about the talking voice vs. singing voice. I have no clue why someone with an annoying/soft/accented voice can have an extremely powerful singing voice
I used to pay some attention to album art, but it's not really relevant anymore since I download my music from the 'net. lyrics is one of the major things I look at w/ rap music, since some rappers can be downright poetic (not saying musicians from other genres aren't, but it's a major component in freestyle rapping)

That is a beautiful version of that song and he does sing it brilliantly!
