Default The Beatles-Rubber Soul-1965

I love all the Beatles music & my favorite album is Rubber Soul Which debuted Dec.1965.My #1 favorite song on the lp is "In My Life".I am listening to it now.Beautifully written song by the best song writers of the 20th century John Lennon & Paul Mccartney. http://www.keno.org/classic_rock/alb...ubber_soul.htm

Rubber Soul, for me, really marked the maturation of the Beatles. They went from being a great pop group to true artists with that LP.

I remember just after the album came out. I went to a friend of a friend's house. He had a brand new red Gibson SG guitar. He could play all the guitar parts from Rubber Soul note for note And that guitar ... it had the lightest action imaginable. You just had to barely touch a string. An amazing visit all in all.

Quiet Walker, George Harrsion also owned a red SG (1964 model) ...I'm not sure when he acquired it ...for the "Paperbackwriter" promo film (May 1966) he is seen playing it
...it sold at auction in 2004 for a whopping $567,000 ....

I do know that during the recording sessions for Rubber Soul that George and John played matching blue Fender Stratocasters....Nowhere Man solo features that unique Strat tone (double tracked too, I think)

Curiously John and George chose not to use their Fender Strats for their 1966 tours , opting to play Epiphone Casino's instead

In 1967 George hand painted his Strat in psychedelic colors

Rubber Soul marked a turning point for the Beatles, they were still a touring band but were now more at home recording in the studio

In My Life is a John Lennon masterpiece, featuring sped up piano by George Martin, simulating a harpsicord, but it is the depth of the hearfelt lyrics that make the song brilliant

With the realease of Rubber Soul, other artists took notice and rock'n roll/pop was soon to transform into something taken more seriously than a 2 and half minute pop tune, attention was switching to the album as an artform

The Rolling Stones answered the call with "Aftermath" released April 1966 (UK) ....The Beach Boys countered with the masterpiece "Pet Sounds" May 1966
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys was particularly inspired by "Rubber Soul"
..he thought "wow, an album where all the songs are good !"
Prior to Rubber Soul albums were mostly an after thought ...the hit single was what music artists focused on

The Beatles for the most part had always made a pretty good album ...personally, I consider "A Hard Day's Night" album to be of consistant high quality but Rubber Soul was something different ....

The lyrics subject matter expanded considerably, an amazing maturity ...
listen to Norweigan Wood ....Nowhere Man ... In My Life

They experimented with instrumentation and sound ....
sitar on Norweigan Wood ....fuzz bass on Think For Yourself

The Beatles were influenced by Bob Dylan and The Byrds ....
infact George's "If I Needed Someone" was heavily infuenced by the Byrds Gene Clark ...with George eagerly playing the song to Gene before it was released

And this was just the begining ....a few months later the Beatles were back in the recording studio recording "Revolver" ...an even more astonishing album
