I like how Bob explains most of his lyrics! LOL! And most of Bob's meanings/lyrics are totally different from what his whacked out fans think them to be.

I'm a forever Bob fan, but I'm not whacked.
LOL. I know. Bob does do some interesting things with his songs if you study him. Like there is one song he does, "Things Have Changed" and in it he sings 'the next 60 seconds could feel like an eternity.' It's sung at exactly 60 seconds to the end of the song. So, I think he slips in making fun of himself at times.

He said in interviews and in his bios that fans would come to his house and want to discuss things like organic farming and he said, "What the hell do I know about organic farming?" They were more like folkie, flower children than acid droppers.

I don't hate bands because of their fans. I just stay away from the fans.

Genesis were my favorite band and I have everything by them that they ever made, but most of their hardcore fans are idiots. And really they have probably the most divided fan base of any band in history. You would think that anyone who could appreciate and love their music as much as I do would be intelligent enough to comprehend the fact that Genesis albums are essentially like snowflakes and that no two are exactly alike, but no. Instead they divide them up into TWO distinct periods: Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and the difference between the two they like to pretend is night and day, rather than a slow evolving process. I used to belong to a mailing list called Paperlate about 15 years ago, where people from all over the world can discuss Genesis, and I was astounded by some of the remarks these people made. Some of them have this mentality that Gabriel is God and Collins is Satan. Really bizarre, and quite childish!

You don't have Genesis without Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, plain and simple. These are the two masterminds who have been there from the very beginning, and the only ones who are still delivering good music on their own (not without bumps in the road of course). I like the latest Mechanics album and you finally hear a bit more of Mike on it than you do on the earlier ones. Probably the best thing he's done outside Genesis since his two solo albums in the 1980s. Those albums "Smallcreep's Day" and "Acting Very Strange" are definitely worth tracking down. And as for "AVS" the vocals on that album are really not quite as bad as everyone makes them out to be, and while you cannot call his voice good, I think in some ways it is actually "warmer" than Tony's voice on "The Fugitive" album. Mike echoes Phil and Pete when he sings somewhat, it has that distinct throaty Genesis sound. As for Tony, I have not heard his second classical album yet, but the first one was a dream. It would be nice for him to deliver a new rock album though, since he has not done so in almost 20 years now.

There was this one music site I went to for a while MadCity until I discovered how bizarre the people posting in it were. They hated Phil Collins so much he was not even allowed to be mentioned by name and was simply referred to a PC when someone jumped all over someone about him.

Most of the "folkie/flower children" were acid droppers! Trust me, I know.

U2
I like a lot of their music and some of it I consider genius. But their fanbase is so arrogant and obnoxious that I've grown to hate U2 and don't even like admitting I like any songs in fear of being labeled a U2 fan.

Phil Collins received a lot of hatred from the mid 1990's onwards, when he moved from Britain to Switzerland in order to avoid taxes and the in coming Labour Government under Tony Blair. He certainly wasn't round Number 10 Downing Street sucking up to the Blairs with other acts of the time such as Oasis, who he ended up in a war of words with and who were equally unpleasant to David Bowie, one of the all time greats.

I should imagine the anti-globalisation lobby and other such campaigners hate Phil Collins as his politics are more Tory (the American equivalent of Republican) rather than left wing (socialist/liberal), but then left wingers hate a lot of people and organisations and surely Phil Collins politics are his own personal beliefs and he's entitled to move abroad if he so wishes.

In terms of Phil Collins music, it's still a lot better than most of the music today, a lot of which comes from television talent shows and the like. I don't think Phil Collins will be that bothered by the criticism, and as for the likes of Oasis, they proved to be just a passing fad and you rarely hear of them any more.

Look at Phil Spector, he did some real dumb ass **** that landed him in jail - but does that really wipe away all his contributions he made to music? As been said there's a fine line between genius and crazy.

I went on Youtube looking for the original River Deep, Mountain High Tina Turner did with the Orchestra "Wall of Sound" by Phil Spector and what I found was all of them were there they were just 'blacked out' boxes and no video or sound. Sad.

Phil on his own hasn't delivered anything good since "No Jacket Required", and even that album wasn't as good as his two previous albums. Then albums like "...But Seriously" and "Dance Into The Light" were horrible. I thought the whole thing started with South Park. He moved to Switzerland because his third wife was there, and he is still there now because of the kids. He obviously has been bothered by the criticism. When Phil retired from the business he said he does not think anyone will miss him. Tony Banks says he should ignore it but doesn't enough, and then mentioned songs like "In The Air Tonight" and how people really do forget how much they like it.
