I remember being surprised when I heard Lay Lady Lay was a Dylan song ... just didn't sound like Dylan.

I also remember being surprised when I heard that Clapton was singing Promises.

Any others?

Ooh, two of my favorite songs.

There are so many of these songs and I don't think of them til they come on. The only ones I can think of at the moment are Ma bel amie by Tea Set, I thought it was George Harrison; Come and Get It and No Matter What by Badfinger I thought was Paul McCartney.

I think a lot people thought
YouTube - Regina - Baby Love was by Madonna but it was Regina.
YouTube - Carl Carlton - EVERLASTING LOVE by Carl Carlton sounds just like Stevie Wonder.

I thought "Be Without You" was sung by Usher, and then found out it was Mary J. Blige. I don't think it sounds like her at all, but it is!

Come and Get It was composed by McCartney and Badfinger was very close with The Beatles. They have always sounded similar to me as well.

I've always heard people say that they didn't think La Grange was a ZZ Top song.

I once won a bet with my two carpool partners on this. "For Your Love" came on the radio. Both of the carpoolers (one of whom was my boss) insisted it was by the Beatles and laughed at me when I insisted it wasn't. We bet on it, got to work, and Googled it.

The song was indeed by the Yardbirds.

I thought it was Stevie for a while there -- it took hearing DJs announce it quite a few times to finally convince me it wasn't (pre-Internet days)

And that IS Michael Jackson doing the background in "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell. (A Radio station DJ guy wouldn't believe me back then!)

Reggae is a genre that I had no exposure to at all, except unwillingly at a distance. Then , in "Chungking Express", I heard this incredible song in the soundtrack, which turned out to be "Things in Life" by Dennis Brown. What a great singer!

I always assumed that Brown Eyed Girl was by The Rolling Stones when I was younger.

"Beth" by KISS. I still can't believe it's KISS, although I've heard it's their most popular song to date. Makes me think maybe I like KISS after all.
