I don't see how you can compare, since Pop is more of a marketing term and not associated with any single form of music.
While you can have a "Pop" radio station, almost anything can be played, the only factor being, the current audience that it is being directed at, and the advertisers you are trying to attract to that audience.

I like both. I'm good with any pop/rock music from the 70's and 80's.

Isn't pop more commercial?
I like both, too, but voted for rock.
Rock feels more visceral.
There are layers and nuances and various genres of both, but ultimately, if I have to choose, I go more for rock.

Pop (Popular - now called "Contemporay Hit Radio") is supposed to be a "melting pot" of everything that is popular at the moment. The bulk of the format, usually goes to the area that has the biggest impact to listeners that advertisers want at that moment. (you thought it was about the music...its a mix of the two, you can have audience, but if you dont have advertisers, you don't make money)
Basically it's a cycle of music that gets played by popular music stations.
Consultant Guy Zapeolen, has a 10 year cycle chart that shows the ups ,downs and projected changes. A presentation version is here, and another version is here. I'd recomend the second one for ease of reading and a good explanation.

A lot of rock is pop music..... I like some music with a "pop sensibility", meaning it is engaging & memorable, but I don't like most mainstream pop music. Everything I like is slightly under the radar of most people, and usually not on the radio. A lot of it is not on major labels either.
I would say that "indie" vs. pop is a better questions, in which case I obviously choose indie music. The term indie is really a vague umbrella phrase that can encompass many styles of music, from garage rock to electro pop.

Noid - they don't both suck. They just ain't your thing. That's all!
Me, I'd take a good rockin' band kicking it all day long until my head hurts. THEN, I'd take pop. Love both, but rock is first! Oh wait...

Yes, indie is a vague umbrella that encompasses many styles, and it's almost as if there is indie (see Vampire Weekend, Spoon) and there is indie pop! (see Death Cab for Cutie)
Rock rocks.
But IMHO not all indie rocks.

I'm totally with you there. I'd take Yo La Tengo over Panic! At The Disco any day of the week.
