Very true.

I do think people tend to prefer & stick to the music that was most popular when they were growing up & young adults.
I think this is true of a lot of people, but it sure isn't of me.

My kids (25 and 19) have actually turned me on to a lot of really good music.
I like a lot of the heavier stuff, and sometimes I like it so loud that it bounces of my lungs.
But even though I am fine with screeching guitars, I do like some sort of melody.

All depends on which band or musician is playing. For example, right now I am listening to electric guitar rock music on my Mac. The guitar player's name is Joe Satriani, and this guy is amazing!

My whole family would agree with the OP. I gets on their nerves when I play some heavy metal.

Screaming doesn't bother me. All that matters are the lyrics to me.

I must say though that black metal is my least favorite sub-genre. Don't like the majority of bands that fit in that category.

Sorry folks but Linkin Park isn't metal.

But, there is a lot more to metal than just screeching loud music. One of, if not the best guitarist of all time was the guitar player from Pantera. Many of these musicians are very talented. The words are more than just screams too. If you listen, you actually can hear a lot more than just screaming.

Sometimes you just get fed up with this K-Fed, Fall Out Boy B.S. that keeps getting thrown at you constantly and you just want to listen to something real and rip s- up.

I might say Metalica might be above the crowd in the metal world. They are pretty good. At least it's all music. Just a different taste. Junk like rap and hippity hoppity is not.

I might also add Judist Priest as real good. Some consider Guns N Roses metal. I dont. If Guns N Roses were to release their first album in 1975 rather then the 90s it would have been just as big a platnum sales record, maybe more. Kiss is metal but are pretty good.

Overall I cant say too much bad about metal.
So you come in and defend one style of music but attack another? There's nothing wrong with hip hop that isn't wrong with metal. There's just as much crap in both genres and just as many good artists with original lyrics and music. And don't give me that crap about "at least they're making music because they're playing instruments". A few notes over and over do not a symphony make.
There's at least ONE good song in every genre. Try finding the one you like in each and you'll see that you'll learn to appreciate music as a whole a lot more.

It's a matter of taste. Many of the most talented musicians can be found in the metal/hard rock genre. Like any form of music there are many terrible bands out there and many of them get a great deal of exposure and hype even though they are terrible (see Limp Bisquit). Metal is and always will be a niche type of music. It's not for everyone.

As a guitar player I have to get just a little defensive here and say that while not for everyone, a band like Opeth or Tool has more talent and originality than probably every act on the pop top 40 charts combined.

To each their own. Telling you, there is nothing better to blast in the car after a bad day at work than some Pantera!

Too much of any one musical tone, soft or loud, is just too much.

Agreed. And even though it is not as heavy - Megadeth (pre-1990s) does the trick for me too.
