As a musician, I can't convey enough how much the music and talent of the Carpenters has influenced me since I seriously got into them these past several years, even with the majority of the stuff I write being heavier than the style they produced. Both Karen and Richard were consummate musicians, and possessed a dedication and all out passion for their craft that will inspire me always. Karen Carpenter may have been physically small in stature, but she will forever be a giant to me in terms of my admiration and reverence of truly gifted artists.
I'm glad some folks have mentioned things such as her drumming prowess in addition to her legendary vocal signature. In the latter half of her career, Karen had also begun to reveal her formidable skills and an actress and comedienne, which only adds validity to my opinion that she was one of entertainments brightest stars during her all too brief adult life. There will certainly never be another like her.
The clearest prettiest voice I ever heard. I was in high school when she was popular. Had all The Carpenters albums. My favorite songs were Superstar and Goodbye to Love.
I appreciate her now more than I did when she was alive. The Carpenters and The Osmonds were considered "bubblegum" music and not cool like real rock n roll in the 70s. I always liked Close To You and On Top of the World though.
Just found this - their first TV appearance. Comments say she was only 17 or 18 at this time.
despite her putting out the same type of easy listening MOR music, Karen got way more respect from the critics and public than Barry Manilow? Was it because of her voice, or just that a man will get less respect than a woman for singing this type of MOR?
