Does anyone find David Gates' music to be instantly catchy and likeable? Compared to Dan Fogelberg or James Taylor the tunes seem to stick quicker in the head first time around. I was lucky to get his "First" CD (1973) and look fwd to getting his others (like Goodbye Girl). What does he do to get this effect? The sound is always rich, the bass is very prominent. He sounds just like Bread.
If you made a thread asking the most under rated band I would have to list Bread as that band. Didn't David Gates just get voted into the Vocal Hall of Fame in Sharon, PA last year or so? Think of all the great vocals that occupy that building.
My faves are:
Everything I own
Baby Im-a want you
Lost without your love
I'm sure there are others but even the best things escape memory from time to time.
what it is about Bread; they have a reputation for being sappy and sugary but oddly(maybe with the exception of "If") to me at least they don't come off like that at all. And what's odd is that though it's pop with some folkish influence, some of their tunes evoke a folk feeling as good as the real thing. My faves are "The Chosen One, Daughter, This Isn't What the Governmeant" the list goes on...
Lotta fond memories as a child listening to Bread.
