To the OP, Ann Wilson is a great vocalist. I love her range in Black on Black.

Joan Jett. I had a poster of her on my wall when I was 6. Still love her.

Annie Lennox. No words for how awesome she is.
Chrissie Hynde. Just cool.
Aretha Franklin. That is a voice, my friends.
Mariah Carey, pre-Rainbow for the most part. She has many non-hits that are very well written.
Melissa Etheridge. She means what she's singing. That's what's missing from most music today.

Are we talking MUSICIANS or SINGERS here? The OP specifically stated musicians but I see people listing singers who are NOT musicians.

Greatest Female Musicians:

Sister Rosetta Tharp - (One of the Great Stevie Ray Vaughn's Favorites)

YouTube - Didn't it rain

YouTube - Sister Rosetta Tharpe-Trouble In Mind-1964

YouTube - Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Up Above My Head

If you cant sing AND play and instrument then you have no business being considered "One Of The Greatest Female Musicians" of all time.

There are others but Tharp is the first that comes to mind.
