Ok, eeek how could I miss Janis or Patti or Joni or.....BILLIE!

What about contemporary?

I didn't like Alanis Morissette at first, but she's grown on me. I think she has something to say. Loved the cameo in "Dogma".

What about Meg White???

She, is, after all 1/2 of the White Stripes. She lays down that funky groove. Let's give the woman her props!

Any other young, up-and-coming female artists I am missing???

Wow, lots of great choices made by the others who already posted!
I don't think I can name just one, but here are a few of my favorites that haven't yet been named:

Sara Evans
Faith Hill
Leann Rimes
Patty Loveless
Trisha Yearwood

Yes, I know these are all country artists. The Pop/Rock artists that I consider among my favorites have already been mentioned. If I think of any others that come to mind, I'll add them on the next post.

Mariah Carey before all the plastic surgery and the miss "Glitter" image.

Toni Braxton: She has a very deep soulful voice and she can belt.

Aaliyah: She was a phenomanial singer before her death. One of the younger ones but she had charisma.

Britany Murphy: I know she is an actor but she sings all the parts for Gloria in "Happy Feet".

Pat Benatar: " Love is a Battlefield" ahh loved it!

Amy Lee of Evanescence. That girl has some lungs on her. Plus her vocal rang is large for someone of her size. If you don't know who she is you need to listen to some of their stuff.

Janis Joplin: I been told that i tend to sound like her when i loose my voice!

I'm only 21 But i know the good voices of my lifetime!!

I'd love to hear Mariah Carey sing some no-glitter standards with a big swing band, same with Donna Summer.

Also too many to pick one....
Amy Lee
Alicia Keys
Ann Wilson
Roberta Flack
Stevie Nicks
Chaka Khan
Christina Auguilera
Mariah Carey
Joss Stone
Anita Baker
Sade

oh forget it, I can't stop.

If I had to pick one that I listen to the most it would be Amy Lee.

Best overall female musician (for my generation at least) is Tori Amos. Best singer for me is Gladys Knight.

Wasn't trying to bust chops, I thought maybe you meant you had to turn it loose to sound like Janis, she sure didn't hold anything back.

Either way, if you're in that mode let 'er rip
