They are both among my favorite albums. Brian Wilson and Lennon/McCartney tried top each other for years. Sgt Pepper wwas The Beatles' response to Pet Sounds. I can't pick one over the other. (Nor should I have to!)
Even though I'm a huge Beatles fan, I'd have to go with Pet Sounds. I think its aged a little better than Sgt Pepper. Songs like "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times", "You Still Believe in Me" and "I Know There's an answer" have such a depth to them. Though "Day in the Life" is hard to compare to anything. Pepper was never my favorite Beatles LP anyway. Revolver and even Rubber Soul would rate higher IMO.
I grew up with Sgt Pepper so I have a soft spot for that album. They were both before my time though and I haven't actually listened to Pet Sounds as an album so I can't compare. But both bands are favourites from my parents era. I can't think of a Beach Boys song that I don't like.
