it's stories like these that made me (and several others like me) just give a big "f you" to RIAA. huge PR mess for them and probably led more people to download music. nothing looks worse than a massive, billion dollar corp going after some little guy. yeah, yeah, some people will say she broke the law. well, does downloading 24 songs warrant RIAA to sue her for nearly a quarter MILLION dollars??

Very true. To make an album these days is not as hard as it used to be. Musicians use all these high-tech technologies, modern software, samples etc. so the album recording is way more easier, faster and CHEAPER compared to it used to be say in 70s.

Other favorites:
  • Suing the Girl Scouts for singing campfire songs without paying royalties

  • Suing not just Napster, but the venture capitalists who dared to provide them with seed money

  • Suing third parties for making Teddy Ruxpin-compatible music cassettes on the grounds that having their music come out of an animatronic teddy bear constitutes an unauthorized derivative performance of the original work -- and if that sounds ludicrous, here's something even more ludicrious: the music industry actually won.
Yes, that's right, the music industry successfully sued for the right to make sure Teddy Ruxpin can't sing their songs. Crap like this is why the industry gets little sympathy from the general public when they cry "boo hoo."

Although I think it is slightly ridiculous that a huge company would go after someone for stealing one song, I still buy my music because stealing is stealing. Whether you're stealing one song off the internet or an album off the shelf of a store, it's the same principle.

Perfect examples of why I don't feel guilty about the 0.01% of my collection that wasn't paid for.

I think it is interesting to criminalize what was normal social behavior regarding music culture.
But what can I say, money is everything now.
People did not change their behavior, money changed the rules.

Now that I think about it, this is brillant! I get the religious (don't want to
"steal" anything and also love feeling "pure") to promote the biggest lie
around; check it out ... label what was normal behavior as stealing, even if
by God law it is sharing ...

by me convincing you it is stealing, then you will
change your behavior and profit me. By profiting me, you have unconsciously
moved from the principle of "sharing" . I now have promoted my "germ" in
you. Your reward is to feel superior! Brillant! I have turned your sharing
into a social sin. Muhahahahaha! Metal Rules!

What are you talking about? It's been illegal to pirate music, videos, etc since most of us were born. That's not normal social behavior.

millions of cassette tapes for sale everywhere you went was for taping conversations and real life events... rightttttt.... and people taping tv programs while they were at work and at school
was illegal... uh huh... thats why the industry sold you equipment (VCR's) that could tape your programs and their advertisements while you were away. To make you criminals!
