Many of the classic jazz musicians were some of the best ever...Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich...greatest drummer ever, Charlie Byrd etc.
Tito Puente was one of the greatest jazz and salsa musicians along with Ray Barretto.
The fact that he wrote and sang that awful "I don't wanna work" song that I'm forced to hear every day on my drive home drops him down many notches in my book. One of my least favorite songs of all time and considering how much terrible music is out there right now that's saying something.
Seriously though.. he is a talented guy even if his music doesn't really do it for me.
He may fall into the catagory of song writer and producer even more than an artist. Didn't he write/produce a ton of big acts in the 70's and 80's in addition to his solo stuff?
As for my own choice, it's tough to say. I feel it's an impossible question but I guess I'd have to go with Motzart or Beethoven or someone like that. Imagine what they could have done with modern instruments and recording techniques. It would be interesting to say the least!
Shugo Tokumaru is a Japanese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who debuted in May 2004 in America with his album Night Piece. He creates every aspect of his music, including the lyrics, music, arrangements, recording and mixing. He is known for the variety of instruments he uses in his music, using over 100 different traditional and non-traditional instruments in his recordings.
He records himself in his bedroom if I recall correctly.
Out of all the music by living people I listened to, this guy definitely strikes me as one of the most talented, how many artists do you know that can play a hundred different instruments?

Rundgren was a great songwriter, vocalist, musician, videographer, and producer.
He played every instrument on two of his LPs and produced some big named bands like Grand Funk Railroad, The Band, Janis Joplin, The Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Hall & Oates, Meat Loaf, Patti Smith, XTC, The Hello People, Psychedelic Furs, The Tubes, and Cheap Trick.
Jim Steinman has said in interviews that "Todd Rundgren is a genius and I don't use that word a lot."
You see Jimi's and Stevie's thumb come across the neck to play chords and bass notes all the time. Stevie even invented a desirable unique string muting technique that people always try to copy. It has that sawing string sound to it. The only other person I've heard nail it 100% is Kenny!
