I'm not a musician, so my vocabulary is limited here.

But just by ear, I never heard much about Clapton's guitar playing that seperated him from any other famous blues players. I didn't "get into" his music until later on, after I'd heard a lot of other blues music. Yeah, he's got a ton of good songs, but he's been recording music for what, 50 years?

He's sort of a John Mayer-type character too, I think, slicing, dicing, covering and copying what somebody else did first, wrapping it in a slick package that gets more airplay, tacitly taking credit for other peoples' work. Hell, I didn't even know that Duane Allman was playing the guitar on Layla until a few years ago.

I agree. One of my buddies did very well at Berklee playing jazz guitar, and I'd say he's probably better than Mayer.

Nah man. You've heard the progression before most likely but there are endless options as far as the licks go. That's why its the best genre.

John Mayer is a girl-tarist. Girls say "Oh, he's a great musician, let's go see him and we can get a blanket and it'll be 100 degrees and I can sip a wine cooler while you sneak tequila shots every time you go to the bathroom in the hopes of blacking out so you have no memory of this evening, just the knowledge that you wasted three hours and some cash to watch some TMZ douche think he's emoting."

Or something like that.

I get the impression he's pretty down to earth and realizes how lucky he is that he has a combination of talent and likeability that allows him to play the music he wants to play and make a butt-load of money doing it.

Anybody that thinks he's a great musician is wrong. But then again many of the best technical musicians have recorded some of the coldest most bland music ever. Because for them it's all about technical talent and not following the muse and enjoying the ride.

That is why Neil Young is the best ever, and always will be.
with the exception of the NY plug I believe you nailed it.

Just to bump this thread and state: John Mayer is GOOD. Yes, there maybe guitarists out there who are better, but he's a lot better than what is considered talent these days. Love him or hate him he has been given props from Clapton and B.B. King. I'm really sorry you're friends didn't make it big. Too bad.

John Mayer is a decent guitarist, but I wouldn't label him as great by any stretch of the imagination. Opinions may vary as far as songwriting, etc...but there are a LOT of really remarkable guitarists in the world, and he's not at that level.
