IMO there is no real way any of those artists (other than George Benson and perhaps Gato Barbieri) can really be considered founding fathers of the smooth jazz genre. After all, most of their smooth jazz careers began in the 1980s and 1990s. The smooth jazz careers of of George Benson and Gato Barbieri began in the 1970s.

for me there are far too many greats in all musical genres to limit myself to one favorite.
