Lately, I've been enjoying downloading some of the freebie songs & samplers on Amazon. The bit rate is 256kbps and on my player, they sound pretty darn good. Just wondering where some of you downloading folks here get your tunes?

Do be careful with Limewire--about 1/3 of their files are infected with malware. Even with antivirus and antimalware programs running, I wound up replacing two PCs as a result.

Also isn't Limewire mainly used for illegal p2p stuff?

Beware getting sued for 100 zillion dollars if your son downloads two illegal songs 'by accident'.

I've never downloaded music on the Internet. My download uses audio tape.

I used to use allofmp3.com until it and its various iterations effectively got shut down by the WTO with the cooperation of the Russian government. Their selection was broad and the pricing structure made good sense: you paid by the filesize, so you paid more for better sound quality. They also let you pick from multiple formats including mp3, wma, ogg and even .wav (which of course was pretty expensive given their "per file size" pricing).

Now I very very occasionally use iTunes. I still think they're too expensive but now that their sampling rate has been bumped up to 256kbps and they've stopped using DRM, I'm a little more inclined to use them. I was an eMusic subscriber for a while but I found their selection to be too random. Good place to find music from indie artists as little as 25 cents a song, but once I had downloaded pretty much anything interesting I found on their site, it wasn't worth the monthly subscription fee any more.

Honestly, my knowledge and enthusiasm for finding new artists took a huge hit when allofmp3 got killed off.

Yes indeedy, which was the other reason I forbade its use in my home, much to the whining and moaning of my kids.

Then again, I don't recall any of the same lawsuits from the RIAA when we oldsters used to tape record off the FM airwaves back in the day.

It's still a copy, right?

Yeah, Rayne, I own a few bootleg albums.
I mostly use I-tunes.
Sometimes my kids give me stuff.
