OP -

I think that sound you are talking about is the steel guitar, not the slide guitar. I believe the steel guitar uses a type of slide, and the terms describe two techniques/instruments which are similar, but not exactly the same.

these are two steel guitar songs that come to mind - both were written about Hank Williams.

^ not at all the "dark and spooky country song" you are looking for, but this is the same instrument used in the two previous country songs, just used with more skill and energy. this guy can tear it up on the steel guitar.

The Robert Randolph video? Are you kidding? You don't hear the guy playing the steel guitar the entire time, or see him sitting right in front of the camera? lol
