Group 87's self-titled 1980 LP featured Zappa alumni (drummer) Terry Bozzio and (bassist) Patrick O'Hearn, along with (keyboardist) Peter Wolf and (guitarist) Peter Maunu.

In 1984 Tommy Shaw had temporarily split from Styx. "Girls with Guns" was a solo project that tried to identify less with Styx.

A year before in 1982 Neil Schon worked with Jan Hammer (Miami Vice theme) in a collaboration Schon and Hammer for "No More Lies", some songs written by Steve Perry, and in 1981 thier first album included "I'm Talking to You".
