In the late '80s, Malmsteen bassist Marcel Jacob wrote a bunch of songs for Europe guitarist John Norum's solo album. John didn't use all of them, and the vocalist Marcel used on the demos, Goran Edman, went and joined Yngwie's band. What to do?
Marcel called up his former Malmsteen bandmare, vocal god Jeff Scott Soto — the best rock singer most people have never heard of.
While Airplay Recordings mass-pressed Talisman's eponymous debut in 1990, there was an early pressing in 1989. This is the official video for "I'll Be Waiting."
You may remember guitarist Tommy Bolin's pre-Purple band, Zephyr. They recorded several underrated albums in the very late '60s/early '70s.
Tommy Bolin went on to join Deep Purple, replacing Ritchie Blackmore on Come Taste The Band. Then Tommy commenced an engaging solo career that was cut short by his untimely death.
Colorado-based Zephyr was inactive for a number of years, but in the early '80s, bassist/co-founder David Givens and vocalist (and David's ex) Candy gave it another go. In early '82, with a new drummer and two new guitarists, Zephyr released Heartbeat. It sounds nothing like the gritty, psych-folk rock sound of their heyday, but it's cool in its own way.
They made a little-seen video for "Heartbeat/Don't Come Back." Revel in those early '80s graphics!
Saw an 80s band in DFW area this weekend, and they did a credible version of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven". Patterned after Revenge of the Nerds characters, The Spazmatics put on a fun show.
Timothy Schmit was known for his time as singer and bass player for Poco and The Eagles. In both cases he replaced Randy Meisner. He was also known for his long hair, so imagine my surprise seeing this video back in 1984 or 1985, short hair and lots of formulaic classroom scenes, "Playin' It Cool". Not the best quality, but the better-quality video is cut off at the beginning.
Another Eagle with a video (1983) he might want to forget; the song wasn't a big hit. Don Felder, "Bad Girls". Big hair, early 1980s fashion, some amazingly good-looking models, lingerie and voyeurism aplenty. And guest cameos by Cheech Marin and Randy Newman (3:50). Video directed by the same guy who did the early 1980s ZZ Top videos, Randy Newman's cousin Tim. (Can't you tell?)
