Van Halen and Days of the New aren't using drop D tuning in these songs - they're using drop C# tuning. I guess technically speaking, you could argue that it's just drop D tuned a half step lower.
Anyway, drop D tuning is extremely common and pretty synonymous with hard rock and metal. Where would Tool and Helmet be without this tuning? For instance, this song pretty much defines the sound of a metal song in drop D tuning:
The difference peeps is if you play in A-440 or 1/2 step down!
Well, I've got perfect pitch, so to me, the difference between D minor and C# minor is huge.
