In regards to political commentary, the Jefferson Airplane definitely fits in this category. And it is never more evident than in their fifth lp called Volunteers (Of America), from the Fall of 1969.
A few lyrics from the title track; "Look what's happening out in the street, gotta revolution."

Volunteers went RIAA platinum. RCA records had a fairly uneasy relationship with them by that time. In fact, a few months after Volunteers hit the record stores, the Airplane had just cut a single called "Mexico", with the flip song on the 45 called "Have You Seen The Saucers". RCA wanted the flip song to be the one promoted. The Airplane wanted "Mexico" to be the a-side.

But Mexico was under the son of Richard (President Richard Nixon)

RCA listened to that. Said no.
About that same time Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen of the Airplane wanted to release their first "blues" album. RCA said fine. Asked them what the name of their group was gonna be. Jack and Jorma said Hot Sh*t.
RCA said no to that too, so they settled in on Hot Tuna.
Note on 45 Mexico. Around that time, if memory serves the Nixon administration was involved with Mexico on a project called "Operation Intercept.", which dealt with the drugs coming across the border, which is where the Airplane got the idea for the song.
