Let's imagine it's 2020 and the rap and pop lobby totally took over the world. They put the rock music outside the law. Further, they forbade to sell rock music in the stores (they delivered an ultimatum to the store owners making them to choose whether to be shutted down or to sell only rap/pop albums). Besides, they banned all the youtubers who ever uploaded rock tunes. And of course they started to control every radio station making rock songs strictly forbidden. As you can see it's a very tough situation for the rock fans and rock musicians.
Though thankfully it turned out that there's the only one chance to save the world from the rap and pop music reign. And it's up to you whether the world will be saved or not (you would be like John Connor to a certain extent). What you should do? You need to compile an album of ten songs and this only album is going to be distributed among people all over the world as a top secret thing by the Undercover Rock Fan Bureau (aka URFB). You know it would be a bloody important task so If you fail to compile the great album that people like it would mean the rap/pop evil forces will never be defeated.
Yep, I know it's my sick imagination yet let's try to make that kind of album that could be like a penicillin for the music industry.
According to the amount of posts in this thread, no wonder rap and pop reign these days. Everybody gives a heck about this problem.
aardvarks is the only one who seems to be ready to join the anti rap/pop movement
I'm not ignoring ya Flash! I think you've seen enough of my posts to know where my musical tastes lie.
I'm gonna weigh in on this issue for this particular post from the standpoint of a portion of the music industry that has been on the decline for some time now-the local retail record store.
Needless to say record stores have been on the decline for several years. I take my hat off to what few mom and pop stores are left, and they have certainly had to reinvent themselves to stay afloat.
In my area we have a huge retail store called Hastings Entertainment. Headquartered out of Amarillo, Texas (!?), they have dozens of stores across the Rocky Mountain west, Texas, Oklahoma, and other plains states. I don't think they have very many stores back east. In the last several years there has been a seismic shift in regards to their music selection. When I take a look at their layout in the music department, they are expanding more and more with rap/hip hop and another genre that has an increased presence which never did before-Hispanic music. Up until the late 90's I would observe store stock and 50's through 90's rock generally took up half the selection. Now that percentage has been slipping a little more and a little more. Rap/hiphop is now taking up 40% of the music selection. I live in a small radio market (Grand Junction, Colorado) and the only rap/hiphop station is the one out of Mesa State College. The other stations (minus one) are all the predictable 100 songs (or so) playlist stations of classic rock, country, etc.
I'm not anti anything. But I am relentlessly pro rock! I understand where you're coming from, though. My favorite era of music is the start of the British Invasion movement up to the disco craze. Garage band, euro-progressive, psychedelic? It's the best!
Whoops! Ten albums from the period of music I like the most. Hard to cut it down to ten. I could list a few hundred. No particular reason why I listed these other than this is what has been playing on the turntable the last couple days!
1. Wheels Of Fire- Cream
2. Days Of Future Passed- Moody Blues
3. Are You Experienced- Jimi Hendrix Experience
4. Steppenwolf- Self Titled first lp
5. Tommy- Who
6. John Wesley Harding- Bob Dylan
7. Surrealistic Pillow- Jefferson Airplane
8. Green River- Creedence Clearwater Revival
9. White Album- Beatles
10Beggars Banquet- Rolling Stones
Watching the movie Woodstock, and seeing how they sang their butt off, thats when the music was great!!! no auto-tune, they actually could sing! that was when it was great!!!
The way you describe 2020, well it sounds like we are already there. There aren't many very successful or well known rock bands today.
I'm a little surprised you chose 40+ year old rock songs to save the world from rap and pop. Doesn't this further how far off the radar rock has fallen in recent times?
I think modern and contemporary rock would stand a better chance at competing with rap and hip hop in 2020 as it would probably appeal to the younger crowd more. Just my opinion though, I didn't grow up in the 1960's and 1970's. I do think classics hold an important part in the history of rock, however to bring Rock back from the dead you'd need to spur something a bit more modern. I would compile a mix of contemporary, covers, and some older songs.
No they won't. Many of those are too critically divisive or criticized for their lack of writing ability. They might flood the airwaves now but their time will come and go, replaced by something newer and more catchy. Hopefully our music industry can progress beyond what's catchy and into what's artistic or well produced.
