I am planning on relocating to MB from san diego. No mosquitos in san diego and have not been around them since leaving new jersey 25 years ago. how bad are they for people and pets? when do they come out to bite?

You mean the SC State Bird? They're pretty much a part of living here but are usually worse during periods with a lot of rain, like this summer. For most folks, they are more annoying than bad, don't recall any malaria cases in the last 100 years or so. They seem to be worse around dusk, dawn and evenings. During the day, breezes usually help to keep them at bay. They're present but not as prevalent in urban areas. Suburban and rural areas with lots of freshwater ponds and vegetation have more of a problem. After awhile, you get used to 'em. <Recent Newspaper Article> Georgetown is just South of MB.

If you plan to bbq on your patio and eat outside, you will need a screened porch. I don't see how anyone can sit outside around dinner time or later without getting attacked by mosquitos here. They do spray and it helps but there are a lot of mosquitos. Also, if you buy or rent near water, lots of trees etc...there will be more.

buy Avon's skin so soft to keep on hand for you and your kids, if you have them. Be sure to start any pets you will have that will spend time outdoors on heartworm preventative medicine....mosquitoes infect animals with heartworms so you have to consistently treat your pets every month throughout the year here. But in the general scheme of things, with those precautions, mosquitoes are not much of a nuisance for my family.

the bad ones usually hang out on the streetcorners at night, drinking, cavorting, gambling, listening to rock and roll music. it is not fair to stereotype them all as bad, though.

They're so big and there's so many, the state puts numbers on their wings -- just like NASCAR.

Well, at least in Murrells Inlet, they are no where near as bad as in Central NJ, where I am presently.

I guess it depends on where in the area you are. I live near the beach, have a lake in my backyard, and have not had a problem with mosquitos.

This is all true, it depends on where you live here but that's probably the case with any area. I lived in central NJ and the mosquitos are not bad compared to where I live here but I live on a property surrounded by a lot of trees and there is a pond in the back. I can't even walk my dog after 6 - 7pm w/o being attacked by mosquitos but other places around here might not be that bad.

Thanks for the info. I did not think about Heartworm prevention for my (2) dogs. This is a consideration.
