Hi everyone! Looking to start a baking business part time. Can anyone help suggest a commercial kitchen space I can rent? I was thinking of churches, but they're usually not licensed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Wouldn't the health department inspect your own kitchen and license you? I had a friend here in central PA who did that. She had to put a door on the doorway to her kitchen but then she was good to go.

I think you will need to find your "own place" you can check down in Pawleys Island and Surfside Beach, there are some bakeries in both areas who do mainly bagels or other type breakfast food. However, the rent may be high, and for the same price you may want to find your own place. I am not being rude at all, but the cupcake fad will end, it is only hot right now because of the economy, and try to find another niche along with cupcakes to help make a good go of it. I know of 3 other people in the area in the past six months who have tried the same thing as you with cupcakes, all have failed.

How about good organic whole grain and whole grain and herb breads (that actually have a strong herb flavor)? The closest thing there seems to be to that is what Whole Foods offers in Charleston but their herb breads leave a lot to be desired (need more herb flavoring/taste). Other bakeries are too geared towards white bread and sweet sugary breads.

I think that is a good idea, however, it may be hard to find the actual "organics" or "herbs" to produce it in this area. I think it is a great idea, and frankly would love to see it. However, I also realize that the cost of getting many of those herbs and wheat shipped into this area would make the price far from being something a consumer would buy, regardless of quality. On the other hand there are two farms in the Georgetown and Williamsburg County areas that are just starting to go organic, and I would be glad to give you information over PM, they are growing fresh dill and many other herbs and I think if you could keep costs under control, you may have a great product that could be sold! The one farm produced a lavender okra that you wouldn't believe, it looked too good to eat!
