We need to get new counter tops and already went to Lowes and Home Depot to price. Are they less expensive at a store that only sells kitchen remodeling? Or are they the best bet in the area? Any good suggestions for stores in this area? I appreciate it!

Hey Rapture - 3 months ago I could have offered you a great recommendation. Last winter, a local countertop fabricator installed beautiful countertops for us at a good price. Their price was better than what either Lowes or HD quoted. They called a couple months ago to say they were closing shop after 14 years. Commercial work (condos) had dried up and they couldn't compete with Lowe's and HD for residential jobs. Apparently it wasn't price as much as it was that people wanted a total package - countertops, cabinets, appliances, etc - rather than work with multiple businesses that specialized.

I know none of that is helpful, but I recommend talking to at least a couple countertop folks, they are likely hurting for work and ready to deal. Wish I had some names to offer.

Thanks. I actually posted questions about different counter tops in the home decor section of CD. A few people posted links for quartz and silestone which is probably what we will get. The sites have a store locator and there's a bunch in MB and MI so I think we will find it no problem. A lot of the people that answered said HD and Lowes was more expensive then the smaller shops. I'll have to hit a few and price it out.

May I ask what type you got and how do you like them?

Rapture, If you aren't partial to a solid counter top you may want to price ceramic tile. I know it isn't the most popular option these days but it can be inexpensive and it is so easy to install you could do it yourself.

We ended up with granite. Probably not the most cost effective option, but I finally gave in to the "resale value" argument. Besides, my only real role in the process was to sign checks. We're pleased with them. The install went nicely and no issues I'm aware of. Good luck with your search.

Thanks but we already ruled out ceramic tile.

FWIW, we liked quartz but ran into a slab size issue. One of our sections is L-shaped and wanted it to be from a single slab. We could do it with granite, but the quartz required two pieces. When looking at displays, we saw some seams that looked very good and were hard to see if you didn't know they were there, but we also saw some that stood out like the proverbially thumb. Sometimes, seams cannot be avoided, but our kitchen is not very big. Of course, not much cooking occurs in there, anyway.

LOL, thanks again for more info.. I just need a straight piece but there is the sink, dishwasher and stove on that side. I was thinking of doing a butcher block on the island. Some people don't like that look but I saw them do it on HGTV a few times and it looked great. I wouldn't do it on the counters, only the island.

I thought about it but haven't looked. They don't have samples of that at HD or Lowes. I'll check out the link, thanks! Do you have this type?
