I heard a rumor that there was some land in Myrtle Beach near the convention center that is just sitting there in the hopes that one day church and state get separated a little more and you can actually do something like that here.

But, I didn't ever hear a time frame...

Time frame is when pigs fly. Ever heard of the Bible belt? Southern Baptists wear a wide one.

When pigs fly is a little overly optimistic.

fotoguy218, just to put this in perspective, I recently wrote to the powers that be in South Carolina asking them to support HR 2366 a bill to regulate online poker. Keep in mind this bill is sponsored by Republican Joe Barton of Texas with 2 of the co-sponsors being Barney Frank and Ron Paul (strange mix, right?). As Joe Barton said, " If you've got a bill that Barney Frank, Joe Barton, and Ron Paul are all for, who could be against it?" (link below) I will tell you who, South Carolina! The reply I got from every single person I wrote to fell just short of telling me what I could do with that bill and instead made it very clear that even if passed SC would opt-out. If South Carolina isn't going to let people play a game of skill from their own computer, in their own home, they sure as heck aren't going to erect a casino any time soon.

Well, it's like how the government can tell me when I can and can't buy wine. But, with all the corrupted politics down here, I wonder if Religion is just a front. Maybe the real reason is the right person hasn't greased the right palms or padded the right pockets....

You mention Ron Paul, and I often thought that the libertarian movement and it's message of freedom would be able to bridge the gap between the Evangelical's on the far right and some of the left wing movements. They I realized "Nah, both sides, aren't interested in freedom, they want to push their values on everyone else"...

I happen to know some people in the legislature in SC and they tell me that there is indeed a push from some to allow gambling in Myrtle Beach at a resort to be built at the vacant lot near the boardwalk. They are floating this as the ONLY legally allowed gambling site in SC to see how much revenue it would produce and it would be heavily regulated by the state if allowed. I understand the owner of the property is very religious ( of which I have no problem with ) so I think its a long shot at best. However once tax dollars dry up and revenue is badly needed strange bedfellows do somehow get together for the greater good of the states coffers.
Myrtle Beach as everyone knows is THE destination spot between NY and Miami and this isnt lost on the powers that be. A single high rise multi use gambling casino there could be just what the Dr ordered once the Federal government goes broke and badly needed revenue dries up. It can happen the question is when. Eventually it will happen, Myrtle Beach is destined to be a gambling town it just depends on many factors of which we are not privy to. Lets watch and see what happens in the next 5 years.

Down here, religion is a political party. In the upstate, it is the political party. While the religious right usually sides with the republican party, support is heavily conditional upon the candidate's doctrine being completely intolerant of contrasting views. DeMented is the perfect example of the religious right's poster boy. Their support is lukewarm, at best, for politicians such as Graham, who are demonic enough to believe there may be some value in listening to the other side's views.

I hear what you're saying about the corrupted politics, and it is indeed a way of life in SC. Regardless, even those lining their pockets are not foolish enough to wander from lockstep with the pulpit bullies.

I believe Mz. Nikki would support casinos if someone could put a sufficiently pro-business slant on it, although she would be opposed to taxing them. Still, no way it would pass the legislature, unless all 170 of 'em suddenly decided to retire at the end of their current term.
