Husband may accept a job transfer to SC .... 30 minutes outside the Myrtle Beach area, Horry County...
He has a choice between SC. NC. VA and would rather I not work and stay home to take care of our grandchildren who reside with us. I dont believe a family of 4 can live on a salary income of only 50,000 a year with house mortgage/property taxes, car payments.. We will be moving from Western NY which is a very expensive place to live and always required 2 salary incomes (I worked 30 yrs to help support our family of 5) but now after we raised our children into adults, We have since taken custody of our two small grandchildren. Is his salary of $50,000 a year enough to live on in SC and would that be enough for me to stay home and raise the grandchildren or should I too work outside the home? Tragedy struck family and these grandchildren have been through enough that my husband would rather I stay at home with them.

We are in NC now and planning on moving to Myrtle Beach in a few months. You would have a better chance doing it in S.C. than N.C.,but it really would depend on where exactly you live, what kind of home you live in and what kind of lifestyle you live.

I am sorry to hear of your tragedy. The median household income in Conway, SC is only $30,331, so a salary of $50,000 would be much better than the median (average).

However, in my experience, the typical house in South Carolina is modest, a 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch with no attic and no basement. As an example, the median house price in Conway is about $151,000.

Naturally your costs will vary if you have payments for new cars or other debts. This forum cannot tell you whether you should work, but you could do some estimates of what you could earn versus what it would cost for child-care.

There are also cost of living calculators which you could use to compare the value of a salary of $50,000 in Conway with upstate New York.Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

Is you CNA daughter not going to move with you? SC will be more economical than NC or VA. You will also find SC pay is not comparable to NY. If you do work and the children are not school age it will mean finding and paying daycare.

A home in Conway will cost less than those located at the beach. SC property tax is not bad, but we do have annual property tax on vehicles along with your home, depending on if you rent or purchase a home. You can contact a local insurance agency and find out the cost of your auto insurance in SC or perhaps your own insurance carrier can provide that info for you.

Only you and your husband know how much debt you will be bringing with you in your move credit cards, car payments and anything else. I don't know your personal info but if your husband wants you to stay at home I would give it a try for the children's sake. If it doesn't work out, find a job.
