Love the Market Common Area & hope to one day retire there but I have a concern about all the fishing piers along the Strand especially the one @ Myrtle Beach State Park. I'm aware that City Council defeated a bill that would disallow so called indirect "chumming" off the piers (which draws fish of all kinds) but remain concerned about both unwanted sea life & errant fish hooks getting near bathers. Are my trepidations founded in logic? Has anyone experienced or know of any such problems when swimming around these fishing piers?

As we, too, are planning to retire in the area next year, I have the same concerns. Hope someone gives us the real scoop.

There is enough speculation that chumming attracts sharks, that it is reasonable not to swim anywhere near a fishing pier. Of course, sharks swim in other places also, so it is essential to be cautious in the ocean.

My Husband and Son fish from the pier frequently and always see sharks feeding and being caught by the people fishing on the pier. All sizes and types. Most just cut their line when the see they have a shark on.

Best advice is don't swim near the piers. Sharks can be found anywhere in the ocean but its a known fact that they will come near the piers when people are throwing fish guts (chum) and what not into the ocean.

Don't let sharks scare you off from enjoying our beautiful beaches and ocean.

You should swim where fishing is taking place...whether it's from a pier or surf fishers! They are attracting fish, which in turn attract fish that feed on what the fishermen are catching!

That said...shark attacks are really not the norm...but you don't want to be in an area where they might be feeding, and you don't want to be in the water near dawn or dusk....that's their dinnertime, generally speaking!

I assume this poster meant "You should not swim where fishing is taking place."

Be safe!

There are usually signs posted to not swim within 75 yards of the pier. Most people either ignore or don't see the signs. But, bottom line is that noone should swim near the piers.
