Default Horry County Teacher Job Fair

I plan on going this weekend. I was just wondering if lots of teachers go? Reason I am asking is because I have been to the Wake County job fairs (Raleigh NC) where I was there 2 hours before check in to get a good number for interviews. Do you know if it is the same or not as crowded? Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks so much.

Interesting you should mention the job fair.
Ive had email invitations for a while now to go along. Unfortunately, im still over here in England until March 15th so I will miss it completely. I really would have liked to go as I have no idea what demand there is for teachers over there.
Here in England it is very difficult to recruit. Particularly in English and Maths.

If you do go along, let me know how it went... oh, and also if there is much demand for secondary maths teachers!

I will let you know, as I'm definitely going. I'm elementary, but from what I'm hearing they are in demand. There is definitely a shortage in Math HS teachers everywhere. I don't think you will have a problem but I'll check it out for you.

I went to the job fair last year and it really wasnt what i expected. I had an interview with four principals from the area where they asked pretty basic questions (classroom management, assessment, etc) and that was about it. I had to sign up for an interview time about 3 weeks prior to the fair but there were some people there who did not have a time who got squeezed in. There wasnt really anything to do but sit around and wait for your interview time. There were a few tables with brochures and such but that was about it. There were a lot of teachers there, primarily elementary.

I am a high school teacher and I didnt end up getting a job in horry country. The demand for HS social studies teachers is very slim. I ended up getting hired in Marion County about 30 minutes away. I hope this info helps! Good Luck.

What do you mean you signed up for an interview 3 weeks prior?

There was a detailed story in the Sun News today about the teacher situation along the coastal counties:

I was doing my student teaching at the time and a mass email went out about the job fair and that we had to sign up for interview times. Maybe it is not the same this year but thats what we had to to last year.

I'm considering a move to the Horry County area of SC. I presently teach middle school in NC. Can someone please tell me which schools are decent and which ones to shy away from? Any help given would be appreciated!

What part of Horry County? Its huge...

If you're looking at MB, they are ranked in this order:
1. St. James Middle
2. Forestbrook Middle (Forestbrook Elementary is one of the highest ranked in the state. The middle is lower on the list, but still great.)
3. Myrtle Beach Middle
4. Wittemore Park Middle (Conway...inland from Myrtle.)
5. North Myrtle Beach Middle

I don't see Carolina Forest on the list...but I'd imagine its higher in the rankings since Carolina Forest is also an excellent elementary.

Aynor Middle is highly rated, but Aynor is further out (I've never been out there, so I'm not sure if rural or what...maybe others could comment.)

No Horry Co. middle schools are on the bottom of the list. Horry is one of the best SC counties to teach in and is very competitive when it comes to jobs (although you're more likely to find something in middle.) I'd take whatever interviews you can and just do your research before accepting!

Schooldigger.com -- Search and compare elementary, middle, and high schools. (School rankings...test scores, percent reduced lunch, etc.)

ah090206,

Thanks for your response! I REALLY appreciate it! By any chance, are you familiar with Beaufort County Schools? If so, please comment! What other counties in SC have good schools and have decent pay for teachers (ha ha!)? I have done quite a bit of research online, but I always come across conflicting opinions. Makes it tough for me!
