Remember the roads (ie 17s) are likely to be JAMMED heading south from Myrtle Beach. Keep that in mind if heading closer to the center point if you don't want to be stuck in the car for the whole thing! lol

We're so excited about this! We have the NASA approved glasses and got some really nice Eclipse T shirts from our favorite pharmacy. In case anyone wants one, you can get them at Surfside Beach Pharmacy - right close to the post office.
Anyway, I am very concerned about the traffic! We are planning to go to McClellanville, which is right in the center of totality. I can't decide what time to leave home in order to make sure we get there on time. Does anyone have any thoughts about that, or suggestions? I'm really sorry that I didn't get a hotel there for a couple of days, because I would have been able to avoid the traffic mess, but it's way too late for that at this point.
George, you are so right about being stuck in the car for the whole thing. That would be awful! At this point, I'm thinking that we should leave about 8 - 9 am and pack up the car with a big cooler full of water and a picnic lunch, etc.
Not sure if I will be in Murrells Inlet for the solar eclipse but maybe. What totality can I expect in Murrells Inlet?
Ed Piotrowski has a Facebook page with lots of great information about the eclipse and what you will see at different points along the Grand Strand. He also talks a lot about totality and the different things you will see.
I will be in Garden City that week and plan to drive to Georgetown for the day. I would have like to go further south but there is just no where to go. It is all national forest. I don't believe McClellanville can handle the crowds that expect to go there. Not sure where everyone will park.
I too am worried about traffic and ideally would like to get to Georgetown by 10AM to walk around, eat lunch then watch the eclipse in the afternoon. As of now I plan to leave at 9AM and hope that avoids the super congestion. As a minimum I need to make it to Pawleys Island and if the roads are that jammed I will just have to watch the eclipse from the traffic jam on 17. Hopefully it does not come to that. 17 is a 2 lane highway and with state police help they could move quite a bit of traffic south.

I agree with you about the town of McClellanville, but there are lots of places very close by. We're actually hoping to go to Buck Hall, which is located right next to there. If I can make it as far as Pawley's Island or south of there, I'll be happy enough. I am determined to get to totality, even if I have to walk, which Google Maps tells me will take about 5 hours - lol.
Don't get out of your car if you go to McClellanville or the skeeters will carry you off.
Thanks for the reminder! I'll be sure to pack bug spray. I wouldn't have thought of that unless you mentioned it. I hate mosquitos!
