sheena, I have done the same.
I have a folder I keep in my car with maps of the area and when I print directions to somewhere I save them and put them in that folder for future reference. The only thing is sometimes those directions get you more lost but that's how you get to know the area.
Funny story...recently I had to be at my office in MB by 6:00 before they closed. In the meantime I had two other stops to make. So my boyfriend gets back road directions (so we thought) for a shortcut there. He turns down a dirt road and there's a lot of them here and after a few minutes I felt something was not right and told him to turn back. Being a man, he didn't listen and continued. Long story short...we made some turns in the woods/on the dirt-gravel road, ditches everywhere, trees down etc... and were lost in the woods. I mean REALLY lost, surrounded by trees and didn't know which way to go. Every way we went came to a dead end and just more trees. My GPS could not pick up a signal, we could not call anyone because how would we say where we were? In addition, my car was acting up and I thought we were going to break down. Funny now, not funny then.
Finially we saw through the woods cars passing on a Hwy and there was a hole in a fence that someone else that was lost before us probably made but an embankment. I have a car not a four wheel drive truck. So we are driving down the embankment, along side of it and the hwy and he finially just drove up it. I was yelling because I thought the car was going to flip and then onto the Hwy. People passing must of thought we were nuts. I never made it to the office and in fact a 45 minute drive, took us over two hours. Crazy stuff and I guess lesson is, confirm directions by asking someone.
