Does anybody know the prices of help for an invalid at home from local home health care agency near Murrells Inlet, SC? We need a few hours each week.
While not in Murrells Inlet, when I was looking to hire someone to care for my wife I found that when from an agency they were insured, bonded, and had training, the cost was about $20 per hour with a 4 hour minimum. That said, there were plenty of home health aides that did it privately for $15 per hour with a 4 hour minimum.
I used an aide two mornings from 8am to 2pm to care for my wife while I went and played golf. I went with an agency as the cost difference amounted to only $30 per day. I was told the aide (female, about 30) would do all type of work like cook, clean, laundry, etc. I really wanted her just sitting with my wife to do whatever she needed so basically all she did was make the bed and cook my wife the one meal a day she wanted which was breakfast. Usually the aide just sat there until my wife got up between 10-11am. The aide would often bring her own breakfast and eat it while waiting for my wife to get up. I told her to feel free to make herself some coffee or whatever. I did not care what work she did. I was not hiring a housekeeper. I was hiring a aide for my wife. I wanted her there if my wife needed something. While not an invalid, my wife did need assistance for a few things.
Prices will vary from agency to agency....you just need to start calling and asking....Most seem to have a "minimum" number of hours.
Yes, we found one here (Ft. Lauderdale area) that charges only $17 an hour with a 4 hour minimum. We're happy with the aide right now. Most charge $20 an hour (4 hour minimum) here, so I'm happy to save a few $$. However, my friend in Murrell's Inlet cannot pay that much. I'll speak to her about hiring someone outside of an agency if possible.

Back in Pennsylvania, we pay $16 an hour for someone who comes in for maybe 2-3 hours at a time. She is with a healthcare agency associated with a hospital, so we're happy with that. Where we live now (Ft. Lauderdale), we're paying $17 an hour, 4 hour minimum, but we're not complaining. At least we can afford it. The aide does light housework, I'm somewhat disabled, so that helps, but she's mainly here to wash and dress my husband. If someone came in for a shorter stint than 4 hours a clip (we get it 2x a week), it seems they charge $50 to wash and bathe. Since this is retirement territory, I guess the aides are in demand. So far most of the quotes I got were $20 an hour. If the aide here comes in only to wash and dress, it's $50 for like 2 hours. We're getting some Medicare here and so the worker only bathes & dresses my husband, nothing else. However it helps.
