It just depends what you're looking for. No, Myrtle Beach is not Hilton Head, but it's not intended to be. Not everyplace has to feel like an upscale resort. The good thing about MB is that it doesn't cater to just one segment of the population. And I like the fact MB has a lot to offer without being an urban monstrosity.

I think there are many things to do, but I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

I have been to almost every beach from Maine to Key West and like MB for what it is. But I can also tell you that Hilton Head is boring, too laid back and is not for everyone.
We booked a week in HH a few years ago and got too bored, the kids wanted to leave, the hubby wanted to leave, my then 7 year old said this place is for grandma and grandpa to sit and drink their coffee.
I do not think it is overated because you get to pick where you want to live and vacation, if you dont like it dont go there.
I cannot think of a single place on the east coast that even compares.
Look at Virgina Beach, they are trying very hard to match MB and they just cannot touch it.
Sure MB is a cash cow, but so is Disney and people still go.
For me I think it is underated as a vacation spot, if you want laid back head to Murrells, if you want family you can find that, if you want partying you got that, if you want to shop, well..... They have the most diverse selections of any town in the US. You can have it all in MB if you look.

MB and the GrandStrand have the perfect surf, IMO, for enjoyable, but not too rough water fun. Maybe it's the shape of the coast from Georgetown to NC, definitely better beaches for walking and surf then any other SC beaches. I was reminded of this after my trip to CherryGrove last summer, after taking a little break from the crowds (five years) at Edisto and other Charleston beaches.

Yes, but not too long ago, the Strand was simply a vacation destination, known for the wide flat beaches, not a 'Branson' type destination.

I think you have this right Sunshine! There is just about everything you need to keep yourself, and family, busy. That is what is a great asset to MB.
Tons of things for the kids, and a bunch of things to do for the adults.
I couldn't handle a boring place.........Myrtle Beach is not boring in the least.
Kids love the Dixie Stampede, the Aquarium, the Water Parks.......the golf cart rides to the beach. Dads love the 100+ golf courses.........The shopping, movies, beach, libraries can't be beat. Just love it there.
Now when am I heading that way again
