Little River
Anyone have any thoughts about Little River?? What kind of town is it? Does it have a "small town" feel about it? Heard some of the restaurants by the river are good, but how is it to live there? How does it compare to the myrtle/north myrtle beach area? Do you have to go to myrtle beach for shopping or entertainment. How are the house prices? Thanks everyone

I have a friend who lives in Little River in a community called Windjammer Village which is on the intercoastal. Very affordable! Several months ago they opened up a Lowe's Supermarket in Little River. If you want to go to mall then yes you'll need to go to NMB. Good Luck!

Born and raised in Little River. I am 44 years old and I guess you could say I love this place. We have many eating establishments, Hardees, Pizza Hut, Burger King,Mexican Restaurants, Seafood Restaurants...A taste for all. We have casino boats local bars that have a variety of entertainment, several golf courses, bowling alley, doctor and dentist offices,Food lion,Lowes food store, cvs, family dollar just to name a few. Just five minutes from the Seafood Capital of the world. I definetly recommend Little River!!!!!!!!!! Please feel free to inquire more. Sincerley, Selina

The thing about Little River is this--it is not a town only an AREA. So, you are dependent on the County for services. Police and fire--which is a volunteer department-- can be sketchy at times. Also, LR takes in a large geographical area from Highway 17 and the waterfront to Highway 9 at 90. Yes, there are a few restaurants on the waterfront and some are good. The waterfront is dominated by casino boats and the traffic and congestion that go with them. Your kids will not be playing along the docks and it is not a pretty or safe place to walk. Some of it is very run down and dirty. There are grocery stores, pharmacy and small businesses in LR as well as fast-food. North Myrtle Beach actually blends into the LR area so you will find yourself shopping there a good bit. NMB and LR are growing rapidly and development is somewhat out of control. Housing in LR is abundant and new homes being built all over the place. LR has many marinas and condos on the Intracoastal Waterway--it is not a river per se.
Windjammer Village is actually almost in Calabash, NC and is a manufactured and modular home place. It is fairly old and inhabited by mostly retirees.
Schools around LR are good except the High School which is a frightening mess. Beware of that. Seacost Medical offers emergency services and is OK but is on Hwy. 9.
The LR Chamber of Commerce is very active and a good source of info Littleriverchamber.com. LR can be anything from a million dollar home on the water to a single wide trailer with a pit bulldog in the front yard. So be careful when you see a cheap price. In Horry County you get what you pay for and decent housing is going thru the roof. Taxes on property are changing and folks are seeing 20 and 30 % raises there. And we will be paying 8% sales tax in a few months and state income taxes are high.
the best thing I can say is do not be confused thinking LR is a small charming town because it is not. Just a place that grew up on the backs of fishermen on the waterway. Was once fairly poor now just another place to clear the trees, pour concrete and make a buck.
For the most part that is Myrtle Beach/Horry County as a whole. Vacationing here is fun but living here is another. Jobs are mostly service with few professional jobs. If you like working fast food, waiting tables, running a cash register or cleaning a hotel room you can get a job fast. Otherwise, it may take time. Good jobs may get 200 to 300 applicants.
And the worst part is going to the beach gets worse every day as NMyrlte sells the oceanfront to big developers. In the summer you may never find a place to park and walk to the beach so beware of that.
A note--expect to pay $1000 a month for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home in a decent area. And @$200,000 and UP for a new home.

I have to differ about Windjammer - we built a home there last May - there are more than 365 properties, and about 20 trailers - the rest are great homes - there are 4 brand new ones for sale right now. The amenites are great, and the POA fees are also great. See for yourself - www.windjammerpoa.com

Depends where in Myrtle Beach & the time of year. Obviously, summer traffic is a factor. Little River to the south end near the airport is a half hour via Rte 9 to 31, avoiding the lights and beach traffic. To get to the north end of MB is about 15 minutes. Hope this helps.
