You are in for an experience. Surfside is a full-blown tourist area, with all the good and bad baggage that brings along. There are plenty of full-timers, most retirees. For most folks moving here, the first year or so is a honeymoon. After that, the traffic, crowds and high cost of living gets to a lot of people.
As far as music, it depends upon whether you mean big-name acts. If so, the closest big-name venue is Columbia, SC and occasionally North Charleston. As previously mentioned, HOB in North MB also has some acts you'll probably recognize. If you just enjoy good music, the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is about 15 minutes South of Surfside. This boardwalk is lined with restaurants and bars, and on any summer nite, almost every one of them will have live music with no cover. Some of it is excellent, some good, some not so good. It ranges from rock to country, a lot of Jimmy Buffett wannabe's, and some SC beach music. Also, Scotty's is a locals-flavor bar in Surfside that has live music. It's worth a visit. Beach music is the heart of the SC coastal music scene, providing the back beat for the shag. It ain't the Beach Boys...
