Question I'm new to forum AND... will be moving to South Carolina... HELP!

I'm moving around the Myrtle Beach/Surfside Beach area in the summer of 2009 and was looking for someone to be my pal and bring me to some awesome venues and bring me to the heart of South Carolina music. I know SC's music scene won't be as great as Boston (hopefully, that ticked someone off enough to respond, i hope!) but a music lover is such. I'm ready for a grand tour... This isn't gender specific. I get along with everyone naturally and if you've ever seen an Asian Hippie, i'll be glad to be your first.

What local bands should I check out, what music venues should I visit and most importantly, will anyone help a Bostonian spreading her wings!?

Well, I've only lived here for a few months, but I can tell you that the House of Blues is always having concerts & stuff. It's in Myrlte... I think South Myrtle. You can check out their website at: http://www.hob.com/venues/clubvenues/myrtlebeach/ Hope that's at least a start for you!

You are in for an experience. Surfside is a full-blown tourist area, with all the good and bad baggage that brings along. There are plenty of full-timers, most retirees. For most folks moving here, the first year or so is a honeymoon. After that, the traffic, crowds and high cost of living gets to a lot of people.

As far as music, it depends upon whether you mean big-name acts. If so, the closest big-name venue is Columbia, SC and occasionally North Charleston. As previously mentioned, HOB in North MB also has some acts you'll probably recognize. If you just enjoy good music, the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is about 15 minutes South of Surfside. This boardwalk is lined with restaurants and bars, and on any summer nite, almost every one of them will have live music with no cover. Some of it is excellent, some good, some not so good. It ranges from rock to country, a lot of Jimmy Buffett wannabe's, and some SC beach music. Also, Scotty's is a locals-flavor bar in Surfside that has live music. It's worth a visit. Beach music is the heart of the SC coastal music scene, providing the back beat for the shag. It ain't the Beach Boys...

Depends on what type of music you like.

I like Alex Austin (acoustic guitar player, singer) and SuperSwamp Heros (kickin electric guitarist) as far as local musicians go.

You can check out the HOB from time to time to see some of the local musicians and bigger named musicians. There are also many local bars/clubs that have local musicians in to play.

If you are in to country, the Alabama Theatre has some country artist come in from time to time.

Good luck with your move.
